Mravaldzali is a small highland village nestled on the northern slopes of the Racha mountains, at approximately 1,840–1,934 m above sea level. It lies deep within the Greater Caucasus foothills, about 33 km from Oni and 23 km from Ambrolauri by road.

Why Visit Mravaldzali?

Scenic Mountain Setting:

Mravaldzali is renowned for its spectacular views over forested slopes, high ridges, and valleys that frame the Racha landscape - making it an outstanding destination for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking quiet mountain immersion.

Cultural Heritage:

The village and its surrounds are home to the 11th‑century Saint George Church, one of the most important historical monuments in the area. Built during the early medieval period and later restored, the church exemplifies traditional Georgian ecclesiastical architecture and houses reliefs, lapidary inscriptions, and historic relics - once including a helmet of Jalal ad‑Din and a sword of Shah Abbas the Great, reflecting rich local lore.

Legend & Identity:

According to local tradition, the name “Mravaldzali” means “All‑Powerful,” connected with the miraculous reputation of the Saint George Church. Folklore recounts how the church and village were spared during historic conflicts, attributed to divine intervention tied to St. George.

Nature & Outdoor Highlights

Mravaldzali Lake:

Just outside the village lies the Mravaldzali Lake - a serene mountain tarn set amid lush subalpine meadows and forested hillsides. Although not suitable for swimming, its green waters and scenic backdrop make it a peaceful spot for picnic, camping, and photography. The lake is best appreciated from viewpoints on the nearby Khikhati Ridge, which also offers panoramic views of the broader Racha landscape.

Hiking & Trails:

Mravaldzali serves as a gateway for backcountry trekking, including routes up to forested ridges and alpine meadows. A noted multi‑day hiking trail from Shkmeri over Mount Khikhata (2,239 m) leads to Mravaldzali. View the details of the hiking trail here.
