The Village Ghebi
Ghebi is an ancient mountain village located on the left bank of the Rioni River, at about 1,350 m above sea level, roughly 35 km north of Oni town in Upper Racha. The village forms part of the Mtaracha ethno‑cultural area together with nearby settlements like Glola and Chiora. Ghebi sits at the cultural boundary between Racha and Lower Svaneti, which is reflected in its architecture and heritage. Historically, the village had strong Svan cultural and linguistic ties, evident in the presence of fortified towers similar to those found in Svaneti. These towers once served as defensive refuges during wars and conflicts.
Ghebi appears in written sources from 1503, and archaeological evidence shows that the area had been settled since antiquity, including Bronze‑Age pit graves and ancient metalwork finds dating back to the 3rd–1st centuries BC. Scattered throughout the village, stone defensive towers evoke the region’s turbulent past. Ghebi Tower is one of the better‑preserved tower structures, sometimes accessible with local permission. Here you will also encounter traditional Racha homes - elegant timber balconies and intricate woodwork highlight Racha’s signature architectural style.
A small Orthodox church in the village center offers insight into local religious life and traditional community gatherings.
